The George Washington University (GW) is pleased to welcome expressions of interest and nominations for the position of Vice President for Research. At a consequential moment in the evolution of the University and its research enterprise, GW seeks an accomplished, strategically-minded scholar and a highly collaborative leader to develop and advance the research enterprise at a complex, urban research university.

The Vice President for Research (formerly the Vice Provost for Research) is the George Washington University’s chief research officer and a senior academic and administrative leader with responsibility for advancing the University’s research mission across its exceptionally broad intellectual portfolio. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, with a dotted-line to the President and serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the VPR provides vision, leadership, and operational stewardship for a research enterprise that encompasses sponsored research and research development, research integrity and compliance, innovation and entrepreneurship, research infrastructure and core facilities, and key sources of intramural funding.

The VPR leads the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), a complex organization of more than 80 staff and six direct reports, as well as dotted-line reports from research support teams. The VPR is expected to be both an effective institutional builder and an energetic champion for GW’s faculty and scholarly community. The VPR must be sufficiently conversant with the mechanics of sponsored research, compliance, research administration, and research infrastructure to run a sophisticated enterprise, while possessing the intellectual breadth and institutional imagination to understand the very different ways in which faculty, postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students find funding and generate scholarship with impact across the humanities, social sciences, policy, law, business, health sciences, engineering, and STEM. Research in the social sciences and book publications from the humanities, in particular, have been important to GW’s own research enterprise as an AAU Research University. GW’s next VPR needs to be able to create an infrastructure that supports thriving research of the large-scale funded variety and that which may be smaller scale but crucial to the mission of the University.
