About the Barnes Foundation
The Barnes Foundation is a nonprofit cultural and educational institution dedicated to promoting the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture. Founded by Dr. Albert C. Barnes in 1922, the Foundation is home to one of the world’s most significant collections of impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern art, presented alongside African art, Native American art, antiquities, decorative arts, and other works in distinctive ensembles that reflect Barnes’s pioneering approach to art education.
Today, the Barnes carries forward its founder’s vision by creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds to engage with art in meaningful and accessible ways. Through its renowned collection, exhibitions, educational programs, community partnerships, and public programming, the Foundation seeks to inspire curiosity, learning, and new ways of seeing and understanding the world.
Located in Philadelphia, the Barnes is both an internationally recognized cultural institution and an important part of the city’s civic and cultural community. Its work is grounded in a commitment to education, accessibility, inclusion, and the belief that art has the power to enrich lives and strengthen communities.
As the Barnes looks to the future, the Foundation remains focused on stewarding its extraordinary collection and resources while continuing to evolve as a dynamic, welcoming, and financially sustainable institution for generations to come.
