Vice Chair for Network Inpatient Services and Section Chief, Hospital Medicine – Valhalla Campus

WMCHealth’s Department of Medicine is seeking an outstanding clinician, leader, educator, and innovator to serve as the Vice Chair of Network Inpatient Services and Section Chief of Hospital Medicine for Westchester Medical Center. The Vice Chair and Section Chief is responsible for leading innovative program development and managing clinical operations for the hospital medicine service at Westchester Medical Center. The service provides care to a large proportion of the general inpatient medicine population at Westchester Medical Center and is critical to the organization’s overall performance and success.

Reporting to the Chair of Medicine, the Chief will recruit and mentor faculty and trainees, strengthen collaborative departmental and hospital partner relationships, enhance and continue to develop evidence-based clinical protocols and outcomes measures to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of care. The Vice Chair and Chief will be expected to lead the academic mission of the division, supporting educational initiatives and the internal medicine residency program.

The successful candidate will be a clinical educator with national stature and a solid track record of administrative achievement.  She/he will have the in-depth knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians, researchers, and educators, while also dedicating effort to continuously improving operations and quality across the hospital inpatient service. This role will need to collaborate effectively with leaders across the health system to achieve program goals that are well-aligned with system goals, prioritizing high-quality evidence-based patient-centered care, safety, and efficient patient flow.  The Vice Chair and Chief will provide mentorship for academic and career growth for faculty and create a supportive team culture through excellent communication.  She/he will also help support and develop new strategic initiatives to help the hospital system adapt to a changing healthcare environment.  

The candidate will be expected to lead the academic and programmatic missions at the main campus in addition to providing support across the network. This leader oversees a team of 35 hospitalists across the Valhalla campus, who are responsible for managing ~60% of the overall adult admissions at the flagship campus. There is a dedicated Nocturnist group for overnight inpatient coverage, and the Hospitalist group works closely with the Trauma, PM&R, and Orthopedics groups. The candidate will also be expected to work closely with the Internal Residency Program Director to ensure that the needs of the Residents are met, including the quality of their training experience.

This role anticipates ~80% protected time for administrative duties.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the department chair, section chiefs, and nurse leadership to improve and oversee operational policies and procedures to optimize efficiency and safety in the inpatient setting.
• Supervise and mentor division faculty and APPs; Foster individual academic career development and guide promotion of faculty.
• Embrace the academic mission in Internal Medicine, including all aspects related to clinical, research, and teaching activities to ensure a high performing and thriving ACGME accredited residency program.
• Support the comprehensive educational needs of the Internal Medicine residency program and the New York Medical College.
• Align the Hospital Medicine service with the broader Department of Medicine and WMCHealth network mission and vision, promoting excellence in operations, culture, mentorship, and national academic engagement.
• Ensure high-quality evidence-based patient care across the hospital medicine service in multiple domains, including patient safety, efficiency, and patient centered care.
• Work to align the goals of Hospital Medicine with the priorities of the Department of Medicine and Westchester Medical Center.
• Develop innovative training and research opportunities for faculty members and trainees.
• Collaborate with Bed Control, Nursing, Admitting, other clinical services, the Emergency Department, and the Chief Medical Officer to optimize patient flow and quality of clinical care across the hospital medicine service.
• Work closely with Nursing and Case Management leadership to coordinate high quality and timely patient care.
• Help ensure appropriate billing for clinical services and assist in tracking revenue cycle and budgetary performance of the Hospital Medicine section, working closely with administrative leadership in the Department of Medicine and Westchester Medical Center.
• Collaborate with the Emergency Department to optimize the performance of the Observation Unit and the care of patients who are boarding in the ED, improving patient care and flow
• Work with Westchester Medical Center leadership to help the hospital achieve its target performance metrics for the Hospital Medicine Unit, including Mortality, LOS, Readmission Rate, Patient Experience, and Discharge Time.  
• Collaborate with Westchester Medical Center leadership on new initiatives that may be needed to help WMC optimize clinical care, patient flow, quality, safety, and equity.

Education and Qualifications

• MD, DO, or equivalent degree from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy.
• Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
• Eligible for (or in possession of) unrestricted medical licensure in New York State.
• Minimum 10 years of clinical experience.
• Experience in Resident education desired.
• Prior leadership in an academic inpatient setting desired.
• Demonstrated organizational and communication skills.
• Record of leadership and teaching, and research experience (health services, translational or basic science).

Compensation

Compensation arrangements are competitive and will be commensurate with the selected candidate’s experience and achievements, and responsibilities of this position. The estimated good faith range is $500,000 - $550,000.
