St. Louis Children's Hospital seeks a Director of Newborn Intensive Care Unit to oversee the delivery of patient care and facilitation of all activities within the newborn intensive service line. This leader will have oversite of he 150-bed NICU and will lead all of the daily clinical activities in the NICU to promote high quality and efficient care of patients. This leader will also develop care practices that assure the highest level of safety and quality, patient satisfaction and strong culture of teamwork among nursing, medical and support personnel.

St. Louis Children's Hospital (SLCH) is the Level 1 trauma, 20-year Magnet-designated, 455-bed, freestanding children's hospital based in St. Louis, Missouri. SLCH has the second largest NICU in the United States, which is a Level IV, 150-bed NICU that cares for patients and families across a 300-mile service area and has seen patients from all 50 states and many countries.

In 2025, U.S. News & World Report recognized SLCH and its physician partners at WashU Medicine among America’s Best Children’s Hospitals, ranking St. Louis Children’s No. 1 in Missouri, No. 1 in St. Louis, and No. 3 in the Midwest region. Position Requirements 

The Director, Newborn Intensive Care Units will possess the following combination of skills and experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with at least 2 years of leadership experience in leading a NICU, to include supervisory experience, and a track record of success in significant roles of progressive responsibility.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • Comfortable working in a complex matrix organization.
  • Strong sense of mission and an active, engaged leadership style.
  • Operationally savvy with a problem-solving mindset, high EQ and a high focus on metrics.
  • Clearly knowledgeable in their field of expertise yet able to demonstrate humility and exceptional skills in developing and forging successful working relationships with executive leadership, physicians, and other key functional stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to partner with executive and physician leadership in strategic and tactical planning and implementation.
  • Technically savvy with strong quantitative/analytical acumen.
  • Highly successful in driving change within an organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, analytic, and oral and written communication skills. In particular, the ability to foster teamwork and coordination of care among diverse stakeholders is essential.
  • Adaptable and flexible style of collaborating up and down and across.  
  • Proven ability to develop excellent relationships, quickly gain credibility, influence and partner with their team, business leaders and the clinical community.
