Headquartered in Great Falls, Montana, Benefis Health System is a leading nonprofit, community-based healthcare provider serving a broad, 14-county region across north-central Montana. As the largest healthcare provider and one of the largest employers in the region, Benefis delivers a comprehensive continuum of care to a service area spanning approximately 230,000 residents.

Benefis Health System operates an integrated network of hospitals, physician practices, senior services, outpatient facilities, and community-based programs designed to meet the healthcare needs of both urban and frontier populations. The system includes four campuses in Great Falls (East, Central, West, and Grandview), critical access hospitals in Choteau and Fort Benton, outpatient clinics in Helena and Lewistown, and a large employed medical group consisting of more than 425 physicians and advanced practice clinicians. The organization’s hospital operations include more than 226 staffed acute-care beds in Great Falls, in addition to critical access facilities, senior care services, hospice, rehabilitation, home health, and assisted living programs. Benefis also operates one of Montana’s most comprehensive senior care continuums, including skilled nursing, assisted living, and affordable senior housing and will soon be adding luxury senior independent living (Sanavita) and a new, cutting edge dementia approach (The Benefis Village).

Role Summary

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, John Goodnow, Benefis Health System is seeking a strategic and collaborative leader to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer. The role represents an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned leader to join a financially resilient, and operationally disciplined system recognized for a commitment to financial stewardship, employee stability, and service excellence. As the largest healthcare provider in the region, Benefis has a dominant market position and a strong balance sheet.

The CFO will serve as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and a trusted advisor on all financial matters.  This leader will have responsibility for all financial functions across the system, including financial reporting and analysis, accounting, revenue cycle (managed through Ensemble), budgeting and forecasting, capital planning, financial systems, internal controls, and operations improvement. The CFO will partner closely with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop financial strategies that support the organization’s long-term growth, stability, and mission.

The successful candidate will bring deep healthcare finance experience, including knowledge of hospital and physician enterprise operations; long term care (due to our large and growing senior services); home care; and for-profit (since we also have a for-profit sub) reimbursement, regulatory compliance, and industry best practices. The CFO will be a transparent, detail oriented and collaborative leader who instills confidence, trust, and provides clear financial insight, identifies emerging risks and opportunities, and supports strong decision-making across the health system.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Master’s degree in business, finance, accounting, healthcare administration, or a related field is required.
  • Professional certification such as a CPA and/or HFMA and ACHE designations is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in health system finance and operations is required.
