Senior Vice President for Development
The College Foundation of the University of Virginia invites applications for the position of Senior Vice President for Development, a dynamic and collaborative leader who will oversee the development team. Reporting directly and serving as a key strategic partner to the President & CEO of the Foundation, the Senior Vice President will embrace a player-coach mindset while leading from the front.
The SVP will provide clear vision and direction for donor cultivation and engagement, while energizing and supporting a talented advancement team. The SVP will also carry their own portfolio of donors and will foster meaningful connections across Grounds and among alumni, while playing an integral role in advancing the Foundation’s priorities and the College’s broader strategic goals.
The ideal candidate will bring a bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree such as an MBA or related field preferred, along with more than ten years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit development, including at least five years in senior executive roles such as Vice President of Development, Chief Development Officer, Associate Vice President, or Senior Vice President. Experience in higher-ed development will be considered a plus. This individual will have a demonstrated record of success securing major and principal gifts and leading complex, multimillion dollar fundraising campaigns.
They will bring broad experience across fundraising disciplines, including major and principal gifts, complex gifts, and planned giving, and will be equally comfortable operating as a strategic leader and a hands-on player-coach. A proven ability to recruit, lead, and develop high performing teams is essential, along with deep knowledge of fundraising operations, including CRM and donor management systems such as Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge, and a strong understanding of compliance and best practices.
The successful candidate will possess strong financial acumen, with experience in budget development and revenue forecasting, and will approach decision making with a data driven, analytical mindset. They will be an exceptional relationship builder, with the interpersonal skills to engage and inspire a wide range of stakeholders, and an outstanding communicator, capable of crafting compelling proposals, presentations, and donor communications.
This is a full-time position that will be performed on-site in Virginia. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and will include a generous benefits package.
