Partners for World Health, a Portland nonprofit with a global reach, has named John Kuehnle as its next CEO.

Kuehnle, who starts Sept. 2, will succeed Elizabeth McLellan, who founded the nonprofit 16 years ago to redirect surplus medical supplies from the U.S. to nations with shortages. McLellan was a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2020.

As CEO, Kuehnle will be called on to “lead the organization into its next era, advancing the mission to redistribute medical equipment and supplies to communities in need both locally and globally,” the nonprofit said in an announcement Wednesday morning.

Previously, Kuehnle was health office director for the U.S. Agency for International Development, leading efforts to improve HIV treatment in Kenya and Zambia. He has also worked as a Peace Corps volunteer.

“John has a proven track record of building strategic partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, private sector companies, and international organizations,” the nonprofit said.
