About Calyx Institute

The Calyx Institute defends digital privacy and advances connectivity in pursuit of a future where everyone has access to the tools and resources they need to stay securely connected.

Through the financial support of our membership program, we build and maintain a privacy-respecting ecosystem of free and open-source software (FOSS) that enables people to live their lives online with dignity and control over their data. At the center of this ecosystem is CalyxOS, an Android operating system designed to encrypt communications, limit invasive metadata collection, and protect users from geolocation tracking. Complementing our software work, we offer practical connectivity tools, such as the Calyx hotspot, that make internet access more accessible, particularly in areas with limited options.

The Opportunity

Calyx seeks a visionary and collaborative Executive Director (ED) to lead its mission building a privacy-respecting ecosystem with software development, bridging the digital divide with affordable internet access, and sustaining our community through initiatives in grantmaking, research, and education. The ED will be a strategic thinker, excellent communicator, and hands-on leader with demonstrated experience in nonprofit management and tech leadership. The ED of Calyx reports directly to the Board of Directors and supervises all programs, fundraising, and fiscal functions of the organization and its 15+ person nationally dispersed team.

The organization is poised to strengthen its operational foundation, stabilizing and growing its membership-based revenue, improving systems and resource planning, and reinforcing strong governance, compliance, and an engaged, effective Board. This leader will partner closely with the Board, operations, engineering, finance, membership, and CalyxOS teams, and union representatives to continue to strengthen internal health, so Calyx can deliver on its mission with clarity and confidence.

This is a defining moment for the organization: new leadership can bring sharper focus to what Calyx is here to do, strengthen what it offers members, and expand awareness so more people understand, and can act on, privacy in their daily lives.
