Covenant House Michigan, Chief Philanthropy Officer, Detroit, MI
About Covenant House Michigan
Founded in 1997 with the opening of the Eastside Community Service Center in Detroit, Covenant House Michigan began as a response to the urgent needs of youth experiencing homelessness. The organization quickly expanded to include street outreach, crisis services, job development, and the Rights of Passage Transitional Living Program. In 2001, following a capital campaign, CHMI renovated its Detroit campus to include the Caritas Emergency Shelter and dedicated transitional living spaces, along with communal areas designed to foster safety and community.
Education has remained central to CHMI’s mission. In 2005, Detroit Public Schools authorized the organization to open charter schools serving youth experiencing homelessness and those without a high school diploma. Today, Covenant Academy schools are chartered by Grand Valley State University and managed by Youth Vision Solutions, including a Grand Rapids campus opened in 2013.
In 2018, CHMI expanded its West Michigan footprint with a 28 bed emergency shelter in Grand Rapids serving youth ages 18 to 24. Since its founding, Covenant House Michigan has served more than 80,000 young people, providing shelter, education, workforce support, and comprehensive services that move youth from crisis to stability and independence.
