Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., Howard University Hospital (HUH) is situated on the campus of Howard University, a historically Black university that has a long tradition of academic excellence and community engagement. As a teaching hospital, Howard University Hospital plays a critical role in the education and training of the next generation of healthcare professionals. Together, HUH and the Howard University Health Science Colleges are responsible for training more than 20 percent of this nation's African American health professionals.
Howard University Hospital is licensed for 340 beds and is currently staffed at 150 beds and offers several primary and specialty care centers including a Cancer Center, a Sickle Cell Center, a Diabetes Treatment Center, the Perinatal Diagnostic and Ultrasound Center and neonatal care units. On an annual basis, approximately 12,000 patients are admitted, with more than 100,000 out-patient visits being made to HUH. A new 225-bed Howard University Hospital building is scheduled to open in 2028. With a $650M investment, the new hospital will feature:

Role Summary
The VP of Revenue Cycle is a highly strategic and operational leadership position that requires an exceptional blend of technical expertise, business acumen, and collaborative leadership skills to drive the system-wide coordination and optimization of the revenue cycle. The VP of Revenue Cycle leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive revenue cycle strategy that ensures the effective and efficient realization of the hospital’s goals, while fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the complex revenue cycle landscape, including patient access, health information management, revenue integrity, patient financial services, and physician revenue cycle, as well as the ability to navigate the intricacies of a large, complex organization with multiple locations and matrix accountabilities.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a world-class revenue cycle program, ensuring a standardized approach and service level in collaboration with other teams across hospital, including the contracting office, information services, and compliance.
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of the revenue cycle, including patient access, health information management/coding, revenue integrity, patient financial services, the single business office, and physician revenue cycle, as well as physician education and auditing of documentation and coding.
- Oversee clinical research billing for both the hospital and physician, ensuring compliance with relevant federal, state, and local regulations governing all aspects of the revenue cycle.
- Lead a team of 6 direct reports, with approximately 180 total FTEs (not including vendors), in the following functional areas:
- Patient access
- Health information management/coding
- Revenue integrity
- Hospital patient financial services
- Physician revenue cycle
- Business office
- Physician education
- Clinical research billing
- Systems and analytics
- Clinical documentation improvement, and
- Continuous improvement.
- Ensure excellent levels of service for revenue cycle processes, defining and communicating revenue cycle performance expectations to staff to achieve HUH goals in areas such as patient access, patient billing and collections, and customer satisfaction.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures regarding the revenue cycle function, ensuring compliance with relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
- Collaborate to drive strategic pricing initiatives, contracting, and physician education, while serving as a member of the contracting committee.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging business analytics, project management, and revenue cycle training to drive process improvements and optimize revenue cycle operations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field; Master's degree preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in revenue cycle management, preferably in an academic medical center or large healthcare system
- Proven track record of driving revenue cycle excellence in a complex, multi-faceted healthcare organization
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, compliance standards, and industry best practices related to revenue cycle operations
- Experience with electronic health records (EHRs), practice management systems (PMS), and other software applications used to support revenue cycle operations
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret complex data sets
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex ideas and negotiate contracts
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and empower high-performing teams to achieve exceptional results; experience with unionized staff preferred
- Experience with change management principles and practices, with the ability to drive change and lead transformation initiatives that improve revenue cycle performance
- Strong business acumen, with a deep understanding of financial management principles and practices
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines
- Ability to travel occasionally for conferences, training sessions, or other business purposes
- Certification in revenue cycle management or a related field (e.g., Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR), Certified Healthcare Administrative Professional (CHAP) preferred

Compensation:
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $215,000 - $260,000 with a generous benefits package.
