About the National Abortion Federation

The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the national professional association of abortion providers in the United States. For nearly 50 years, NAF has served as the trusted expert on abortion care, uniting, supporting, and representing abortion providers and the people they serve in pursuit of accessible and equitable abortion care across all 50 states.

Mission: NAF unites, supports, and represents abortion providers and the people they serve, in pursuit of accessible and equitable abortion care.

Vision: NAF envisions a just society where abortion care is a basic part of health care. Providers will thrive in communities, empowered to deliver expert care that is safe, accessible, and equitable for all people – no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they have.

Founded by abortion providers who were radical and unapologetic in their pursuit of abortion access, NAF was built on a foundation of clinical excellence, provider support, and unwavering commitment to ensuring that people can access the care they need. Today, NAF’s broad and diverse membership includes independent clinics, Planned Parenthood affiliates, hospital-based programs, individual clinicians, telehealth providers nationwide, and allied reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations, NAF remains the authoritative voice and essential resource for the abortion care community.

NAF advances its mission through four interconnected pillars of work:

  • Grow a Strong Membership Base: NAF strengthens and expands its membership to support abortion providers in delivering safe, equitable care to patients through evidence-based clinical standards, quality assurance, and comprehensive training programs.
  • Set, Support, and Train Providers on Standards: NAF establishes and advances the latest evidence-based standards for abortion care, providing technical assistance and professional development to ensure clinical excellence across the field.
  • Connect People with Information and Funding: Through its hotline service (the National Abortion Hotline), NAF serves as a lifeline for people seeking abortion care, providing information, referrals, and direct financial assistance to help people access the care they need.
  • Represent Providers and Patients: NAF advocates for abortion access by representing providers and patients in policy debates, protecting providers from violence and harassment through its Security Program, and shaping public understanding of abortion care.

In 2024, NAF helped more than 111,400 people with funding for their abortions and provided travel support to 2,318 people. NAF conducted 34 quality assurance site visits across 14 states, DC, and Colombia; facilitated 8 clinical training sessions; and awarded 5,883 CME credits. The Security Program conducted 60 security assessment and training visits and 98 law enforcement briefings and meetings, standing as the first line of defense for providers facing threats. NAF also supported members in adopting innovative patient communication and telehealth platforms to expand access.

Meeting the Moment

In the aftermath of Roe v. Wade's reversal, abortion providers face unprecedented challenges. The legal landscape has fractured into a complex state-by-state patchwork, creating the most hostile environment for abortion care in half a century. Providers operate under relentless strain and threats, while access to care remains deeply inequitable based on geography, identity, and economic resources.

Following a rigorous, values-driven strategic planning process that centered member voices and movement partners, NAF has embarked on an organizational reset and evolution. This new strategic framework represents a recommitment to the bold, unapologetic vision of NAF's founders and a clear-eyed determination to meet this moment with innovation, solidarity, and strength.

Underpinning all of NAF's work is an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. Over the next five years, NAF will focus on strengthening and expanding services to better support providers' ability to innovate; evolving the Hotline to streamline access; building organizational sustainability; amplifying the voice of providers and patients in policy and advocacy; and shaping public understanding of abortion care. NAF is poised to strengthen its impact and deepen its support for abortion providers and the people they serve.
