The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry is accepting applications for the position of Clinical Chief, Division of Adult and Acute Psychiatry. This position is for a full-time Clinician-Educator eligible to be appointed at the rank of Associate or full Professor. This role reports to the Vice Chair of Clinical Services.

This individual will be responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the Division’s clinical services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered psychiatric care across all service lines. The Clinical Chief will lead initiatives in clinical service planning, workforce development, and performance improvement, while fostering an environment of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning. In partnership with the Academic Chief and departmental leadership, the Clinical Chief will support the academic mission and ensure clinical sites are conducive to education and research. Additional responsibilities include oversight of clinical budgets, regulatory compliance, quality monitoring, faculty recruitment and mentorship, and community engagement. This role is instrumental in shaping the growth and direction of adult and acute psychiatric services, and in cultivating strong relationships with faculty, staff, hospital leadership, and external partners.

The URMC Department of Psychiatry is growing and evolving! The size of the faculty has nearly doubled in the last 5+ years to almost 200 members, and total faculty and staff in the department is now over 1000. As such, the successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary, collaborative team committed to advancing the department’s four-fold mission: clinical care, education, service, and research. The department’s expanding divisions aim to provide integrated, multidisciplinary care that enhances cognitive, mental, and overall well-being for patients of all ages through renowned clinical services, internationally recognized research, and top physician fellowship programs. The department embraces the Biopsychosocial Model of clinical care, education, and scholarship, which was first articulated and developed at the University of Rochester - Collaboration, Communication, Complementarity, Competence, and Compassion.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) with board certification in Psychiatry
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted NYS medical license
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive clinical leadership experience, including supervision and mentorship of clinical staff.
  • Demonstrated track record of clinical excellence in adult or acute psychiatric care settings.
  • Experience with strategic planning and implementation within a clinical service line or division.
  • Proven ability to manage clinical operations, including financial performance, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance (e.g., Joint Commission standards).
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Experience conducting OPPE and FPPE reviews or equivalent performance evaluation processes.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in developing policies, procedures, and workflows that support efficient and high-quality clinical care.
  • Demonstration of outstanding academic accomplishments and trajectory which may include innovative program development, excellence in teaching, clinical leadership, or research
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior service as a Medical Director, Clinical Chief or Division Head of an inpatient or emergency psychiatry service in an academic or hospital-based psychiatry department.
  • Experience with budget management, financial oversight, and productivity tracking in a clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with academic leaders to align clinical operations with teaching and research missions.
  • Experience in community engagement, outreach programs, and building strategic external partnerships.
  • Familiarity with workforce planning, clinical coverage strategies, and physician scheduling models.
  • Experience optimizing physician satisfaction, staff engagement, and culture-building initiatives.
  • Involvement in marketing, branding, or growth strategy development for psychiatric clinical services.
  • A record of supporting confidentiality, data security, and compliance with HIPAA and privacy laws.
  • Prior involvement in implementation of business plans or growth strategies for service lines.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $307,176 to $380,000. The referenced pay range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of compensation for this faculty position.  Individual salaries will be determined within the job's salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
