The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks an experienced, nimble, and innovative leader to serve as the Associate Vice President for Research Operations (AVP-RO). Reporting to the Vice President for Research & Creative Achievement, the AVP-RO leads a team of professionals responsible for ensuring excellence in UMBC’s research operations. UMBC is classified as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Foundation and reported a Research and Development portfolio of $151 million for FY24 to the NSF HERD survey. The Division of Research & Creative Achievement (ORCA) consists of seven offices and a team of 45 staff members, providing the administrative foundation to support, promote, and manage UMBC’s expansive research enterprise. The AVP-RO will provide strategic and administrative leadership for the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Research Protections and Compliance, and the Office of Research Administrative Systems, in addition to providing leadership, visibility, advising, and collaboration on UMBC Committees and Councils and across the University System of Maryland on related issues and policy development.  

The Division of Research and Creative Achievement (ORCA) plays a central role in supporting and advancing UMBC’s research, compliance, and creative endeavors. The Division advocates for faculty, staff, and students by ensuring access to vital research infrastructure and promoting a culture of innovation and discovery across the disciplines. Through its efforts, UMBC fosters excellence in research, scholarship, and creative achievement at all levels.
