About La Casa de las Madres
In 1976, a coalition of Bay Area women founded La Casa de las Madres, San Francisco's oldest and largest shelter dedicated to women and children escaping domestic violence. Named for the mothers they sought to honor, La Casa's founders built an organization rooted in safety, nurturing, and unconditional acceptance. Fifty years later, that founding conviction has grown into one of the Bay Area's most trusted voices in the fight against domestic violence.
La Casa operates around the clock, 365 days a year, and is the only domestic violence organization in San Francisco providing access to emergency shelter at any hour of any day. Its multilingual, free services include a 24-hour adult crisis line, a 24-hour teen crisis line, a text support line, drop-in counseling, legal and hospital accompaniment, safe housing programs, CalWORKs and family-focused case management, and prevention education for schools, workplaces, and the broader community.
The Opportunity
La Casa de las Madres seeks an Executive Director to serve as chief advocate and cultural anchor, reporting to the Board and leading a staff of approximately 40. As La Casa marks its 50th anniversary, the next leader will bring strategic vision, operational steadiness, and genuine passion for the mission and the survivors served to carry the organization’s legacy forward with boldness and purpose. As the organization's public face and primary spokesperson within San Francisco's politically dynamic domestic violence landscape, the Executive Director will continue La Casa's tradition of bold advocacy: engaging city officials, law enforcement, media, and elected leaders; building coalitions; and ensuring La Casa remains the go-to resource for domestic violence expertise. They will also cultivate donor, foundation, and corporate relationships to diversify and expand philanthropic support.
Internally, the Executive Director will strengthen organizational culture and people infrastructure. This requires a firm but compassionate management style, setting clear expectations, building trust, and staying accessible and present while holding people accountable. The Executive Director will have oversight of daily operations and financial management, ensuring program quality and compliance across government contracts and grants, partnering with the Directors of Community and Housing Programs to advance service excellence, while acting as a strategic advisor to the Board. The ideal candidate combines a stability-first approach, reinforcing what works before introducing change, with the entrepreneurial drive to pursue new growth, partnerships, and impact.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $200,000 - $220,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.
