The University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications and nominations for the J. UVA Arts offers dynamic programming across the visual, written, architectural, cinematic, and performing arts as well as lectures, symposia, workshops and community events. The holder of this position will benefit from UVA’s planned Center for the Arts, which will be home to the Tessa and Richard Ader Performing Arts Center, the Fralin Museum of Art, the Kluge-Ruhe Collection of Aboriginal Art and the College of Arts & Sciences’ Department of Music. The new Center is a lynchpin in UVA’s broader arts expansion.

Position Details

The J. Sanford Miller Professor and Director of Arts Leadership reports to the Chair of their home department and serves as a full-time tenured member of the faculty within the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The holder of this role will be tenured at the level of associate (J. Sanford Miller Associate Professor [of discipline] and Director of Arts Leadership) or full (J. Sanford Miller Professor [of discipline] and Director of Arts Leadership) professor. The College is open to this individual residing in any of the Departments of the college.

This position will teach classes in arts administration (or related areas) and is oriented towards building an undergraduate program in interdisciplinary arts leadership at UVA. This program is for students who want to work and lead in any arts-related career, including nonprofit arts organizations, art business, or related industries such as music, media and design. UVA has historic strengths in museum curation, arts management, and development/advancement in the arts. The College is interested in incorporating business and finance elements into the program, along with thoughtful representation from arts and humanities departments (including international languages) to amplify dimensions in the industry that are not currently offered at UVA.

The ideal candidate should be well connected nationally and/or internationally in the business of the arts; should have the potential for excellent communication and connection with donors and advancement; and should have the creativity and imagination to realize how to leverage partnerships beyond the College (such as with the School of Architecture, Darden School of Business, McIntire School of Commerce, and an array of visual and performing arts programming on Grounds) to the benefit and growth of the Arts Leadership program.
