Background

An anatomical gift is the donation of an individual's body after death. The Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois (“AGA-IL”), founded in 1918, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that manages the willed body donor program for the medical research and educational institutions of Illinois. It receives, prepares, preserves and distributes willfully donated human remains for the purpose of medical, biological, and anatomical education and research at licensed and accredited institutions of higher learning throughout Illinois and beyond.

Moreover, the association makes its resources and facility available for anatomical, medical and mortuary science training. The AGA-IL supports the training of thousands of medical students and allied health students and professionals annually. With the materials supplied by the AGA- IL, these individuals develop knowledge and understanding of human anatomy through dissection. This training represents a crucial phase of health care education, one that cannot be replaced by computer simulation or virtual reality.

The AGA-IL’s member institutions include eight medical schools in the State of Illinois: Loyola University of Chicago, Midwestern University, National University of Health Sciences, Northwestern University, Rush University Medical Center, Southern Illinois University, The University Chicago and the University of Illinois. Under the supervision of these member institutions, the AGA-IL procures, prepares and preserves donations for medical and scientific study.

The Opportunity

The Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois (AGA-IL) is seeking a dynamic, administrative leader to direct the operations of the organization, along with its major programs and strategic growth initiatives, charting its future course as its Executive Director.

The Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors to define a clear vision for AGA-IL and strategically address the organization’s current challenges and opportunities, proposing ways to innovate and advance the mission. They will effectively foster collaboration, overseeing the day-to-day operations of AGA-IL, including financial and grant stewardship, facility and program management, talent and culture development, quality of donation services, and marketing.

In addition, the Executive Director will foster inclusion and accountability among a team of five staff members, ensuring that all staff remain informed, engaged and professionally enriched in service to AGA-IL’s member institutions, prospective donors and diverse communities. Within the first six months on the job, this leader will need to take on various roles alongside staff to assess the organization’s infrastructure, risk factors, staff responsibilities and donor services program.

As the primary ambassador and trusted voice for AGA-IL, the Executive Director will represent the organization regionally and nationally. This leader will have a perspective on a wide range of topics and multi-faceted issues impacting AGA-IL’s member institutions and key partners, including funeral directors, nursing homes, State and Federal regulations and more. The next leader must raise the visibility of AGA-IL and effectively articulate the value of the organization’s work, influencing local, regional and national conversations that directly lead to achieving the mission.

Ultimately, the Executive Director will reimagine the future of a longstanding organization that is at a critical inflection point of growth and opportunity for greater community impact across the state of Illinois.
